Operating tanks with flammable gas or liquid mixtures requires carefully considered safety measures. Tanks have a design and function that often require equipment to prevent them from imploding or exploding. A sudden drop in pressure can create a vacuum. Some tanks are subject to lightning which can ignite the gas from the vent outlet and send a flame in via the exhaust air.
Mode of operation
Flame arrestors can be installed in inlets to storage and processing equipment, ventilation openings, exhaust systems or on connecting pipes. The main function is to allow the flow of gases or vapors from flammable liquids, but prevent the transfer of a flame. Elements inside the flame arrestor housing create an extinguishing barrier for the ignited vapor mixture. Flame arrestors are installed in-line or end of line. The core consists of filter discs assembled from stainless steel strips. The steel strips absorb the heat from the flame and kill it before it can ignite inside the tank.

The 6K00 model is designed for atmospheric and low pressure storage tanks where pressure and vacuum relief is required. It has a built-in flame arrester consisting of a crimped SST metal element that allows the flow of gases or fumes from flammable liquids but prevents flame transfer from the outside. The 6K00 model is used as an independent safety system to ensure explosion protection.
